How To Find Your Computer Name

Your computer name is required by the IT Help Desk to locate and support your device. Follow the steps below for your operating system.


Windows Windows 10 & 11

Method 1 — Settings App

Press ⊞ Win + I to open Settings.

Go to System > About.

Your computer name is listed next to Device name.

The Device name field displays your computer name (e.g., KEAN-LT-00123). Provide this to the IT Help Desk when submitting a support ticket.


Method 2 — Command Prompt (Quickest)

Press ⊞ Win + R, type cmd, then press Enter.

In the Command Prompt window, type the following and press Enter:

hostname

Your computer name will appear on the next line in the Command Prompt window.


Method 3 — System Properties

Right-click the Start button and select System.

Your computer name appears under Device name at the top of the page.

macOS Ventura, Sonoma & later

Method 1 — System Settings

Click the Apple menu  in the top-left corner of your screen.

Select System Settings (Ventura and later) or System Preferences (older versions).

Click General, then select About.

Your computer name is listed at the top next to Name.

The Name field displays your computer name (e.g., KEAN-MBP-00456). Provide this to the IT Help Desk when submitting a support ticket.


Method 2 — Terminal (Quickest)

Press ⌘ Cmd + Space to open Spotlight, type Terminal, and press Return.

Type the following command and press Return:

scutil --get ComputerName

Your computer name will be printed on the next line in the Terminal window.
