Using Canvas Studio

This solution explains how instructors and students can use Canvas Studio to create, upload, manage, and share video and audio content directly within Canvas. Canvas Studio is a built-in media tool that allows users to record videos, add captions, embed media in courses, and track student engagement. Studio helps enhance online learning by providing interactive multimedia content that can be easily integrated into assignments, discussions, pages, and announcements. 

This solution should be used when instructors or students want to: 

    • Record or upload videos within Canvas

This is for instructors and students who want to use Canvas Studio to create or share video and audio content within a Canvas course. Studio can be used to record lectures, provide feedback, create instructional materials, or submit video assignments. 

Before using Canvas Studio, the following requirements should be met:

    • The Canvas Studio tool must be enabled for the institution  
    • The user must have access to Canvas Studio  
    • A webcam and a microphone are recommended for recording videos  
    • A stable internet connection is required for uploading media 

How to Access Canvas Studio

Step 1: Open Canvas Studio 

    1. Log into Canvas.  
    2. Click Studio in the Global Navigation menu (left side of the screen).  

If Studio is not visible, it may be accessed through the Rich Content Editor when creating content. 

How to Upload a Video to Canvas Studio

Step 1: Upload Media 

    1. Click Studio in the Global Navigation menu.  
    2. Click Add.  
    3. Select Upload Media.  
    4. Choose the video or audio file from your computer.  
    5. Click Open to upload the file.  

Supported formats typically include MP4, MOV, and MP3. 

How to Record a Video in Canvas Studio

Step 1: Start Recording

    1. Click Studio.  
    2. Click Add.  
    3. Select Record.  
    4. Choose to record using:  
  • Webcam  
  • Screen capture  
  • Screen and webcam  

Step 2: Save Recording

    1. Click Start Recording.  
    2. When finished, click Finish.  
    3. Enter a title for the recording.  
    4. Click Save Media. 

How to Embed Studio Video in a Course

Step 1: Open the Rich Content Editor

Studio videos can be embedded in: 

    1. Pages  
    2. Assignments  
    3. Discussions  
    4. Announcements  
  • Open the content item (example: Page or Assignment).  
  • Click Edit.  

Step 2: Insert Studio Media

    1. Click the Studio icon in the Rich Content Editor toolbar.  
    2. Select the video from your Studio library.  
    3. Click Embed.  
    4. Click Save. 

How to View Student Engagement with Studio Video

Instructors can view analytics such as: 

    • Who watched the video  
    • How long the video was viewed  
    • Which parts of the video were replayed  

To view insights: 

    • Open the video in Studio.  
    • Click Insights.  

Common Issues & Troubleshooting 

Studio is not visible in Global Navigation 

    • Studio may not be enabled for the course or institution.  
    • Contact IT or Learning Technologies for assistance.  

Video will not upload 

    • Confirm the file format is supported (MP4 recommended).  
    • Check the internet connection.  
    • Try reducing the file size if the upload fails.  

Recording option not working 

    • Confirm your browser has permission to access your camera and microphone.  
    • Try using Chrome or Firefox.  

Students cannot view the video 

  • Confirm the video is properly embedded and the course is published.  

Captions are missing 

    • Captions may take time to process after upload.

    • The specific tool or link in question that you are trying to access   

If the issue involves permissions, locked navigation items, or course template restrictions, the request may need to be reviewed by the Learning Technologies Management Team.
