Turning on Email Notifications in Canvas

Introduction 

This article explains to students, staff and faculty, how to enable email notifications in Canvas so you can receive alerts for messages and communication activity. 

Use this guide if you want to: 

    • Receive email notifications for Canvas conversations (Inbox messages)  
    • Ensure you are alerted immediately when someone contacts you in Canvas  

Before proceeding, ensure that: 

    • You can log into your Canvas account  
    • Your email address is correctly set in your account settings  

Instructions / Solution Steps 

Step 1: Access Notification Settings

    1. Log into your Canvas account  
    2. Select Account in the top left navigation menu  
    3. Click Notifications
       

Step 2: Review Notification Columns

  • Students: You will see one email column ([email protected])  
  • Faculty/Staff: You will see two email columns:  

[email protected]  

[email protected] 

Important:

Enable notifications on only one email column to avoid duplicate messages. 

Step 3: Enable Conversation Notifications 

  1. Scroll down to the Conversations section
  2. Locate your preferred email column  
  3. Click the grey bell icon  
  4. Select Notify immediately
     
  • When enabled, the bell icon will turn green, indicating notifications are active   

Common Issues & Troubleshooting 

Receiving duplicate emails  

    • Ensure notifications are enabled on only one email column  

Not receiving messages  

    • Confirm the bell icon is set to Notify immediately  
    • Check spam/junk folders  

Incorrect email address  

    • Verify your contact information under Account Settings
