Offboarding Inactive Student Accounts
Starting in November 2026, Kean University will automatically disable the accounts of students who are no longer enrolled in courses. This change will help ensure University systems remain accessible to current active students while reducing security risks associated with inactive accounts.
Who is affected?
To maintain active student status, you must have been enrolled in at least one of the two most recent fall or spring semesters and have not yet earned your degree. Enrollment in summer or winter sessions does not count toward active student status.
If you have not enrolled in classes for three consecutive fall or spring semesters, you are no longer considered an active student, and your account will be disabled.
Not affected
- Newly admitted, pre-enrolled, and incoming students who have not yet registered for their first classes.
- Alumni: Students who have graduated follow a separate account deactivation schedule. For more information, see the Alumni Account Deactivation Communication Plan.
When does this happen?
- First Review: November 2026.
- Ongoing Reviews: Each fall and spring semester, shortly after the add/drop period ends.
Will I be notified?
- Advance Notice: Affected students will receive an email 30 days before their account is disabled.
- Email Notification: Notices will be sent to both your Kean email and the personal email address on file with the University.
- Action Required: Make sure your personal email address is up to date in your KeanWISE User Profile.
What happens when my account is disabled?
- You can no longer sign in to Kean email, OneDrive, Canvas, KeanWISE, or other University systems that use your Kean login.
- Your Kean email, OneDrive files, and other account data are deleted and cannot be recovered.
- Kean does not forward email after an account is disabled.
Important: Update any services that use your Kean email address (LinkedIn, Handshake, banking, subscriptions, etc.) to a personal address.
Save your data before your account is disabled
Large accounts can take several days to download, so start as soon as you get your notice.
I want to keep my account or come back to Kean. What should I do?
- Before the deadline: registering for classes keeps you an active student and keeps your account active.
- After your account is disabled: you must reapply to the University to be readmitted. Readmitted students receive a new Kean account. Data from your old account cannot be moved to it.
- If you believe your account was disabled by mistake (for example, you are registered for the current semester): contact the IT Help Desk right away.
